Thief Shot by Police

KUCHING, SARAWAK on Nov 28 2009
A policeman shot and injured a suspected thief who attempted to attack him and a colleague with a piece of wood in Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce here on Saturday.

The 33-year-old suspect, who sustained a gunshot wound in the right shoulder in the 10.45am incident, was warded at a nearby hospital in a stable condition.

Earlier, the man was nabbed by two policemen in connection with a case of theft at a supermarket in MJC Batu Kawa.

Enroute to the Sungai Maong police station in a police patrol car, the suspect answered a call of nature while inside the vehicle, forcing the lawmen to wind down the windows.

Upon arrival at the congested Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce, the man opened the car door and fled, before jumping into a nearby stream.

At that juncture, he tried to attack the policemen with a piece of wood, only to be shot.

Sarawak CID chief SAC Huzir Mohamad confirmed the incident.
