High Speed Chase - Car Thief Arrested

KUCHING, SARAWAK on 28 Nov 2009.
A suspected car thief was arrested after a high-speed chase which saw him crash into a motor-cyclist.The incident happened around 5.30pm on Saturday when an undercover police team from the state contingent D8 unit, led by officer-in-charge ASP Abdul Razak Abdul Wahab, spotted a suspicious-looking Proton Waja along Jalan Setia Raja.

The team noticed the tampered lock on the front passenger door which had been put back in place using cellotape.

Using four unmarked cars, police trailed the Waja for some distance but ended up chasing the vehicle after the driver realised he was being followed.

The high-speed chase ended in Tabuan Laru when the suspect, who first tried to escape his pursuers via several small lanes behind Kuching Medical Specialist, found his path blocked by police.

He put the vehicle into reverse, crashing into a motorcyclist in the process before attempting to speed off again.

The motorcyclist, a local man, was slightly injured in the collision and required medical treatment for minor cuts.

The suspect lost control of the car when he tried to speed off again and ended up stuck on a kerb above a monsoon drain.

He opened the car door but fell into the bottom of the five-foot deep drain on getting out of the car.

He was surrounded and pulled out of the drain by police before being taken into custody.

A check of his MyKad showed him to be a 28-year-old from Tapah.

Further checks showed the gold-coloured vehicle, which still had its original licence plates, was reported stolen from Kota Sentosa earlier the same day.

The suspect is being held to assist police in investigation.
